Material Scientist - Asphalt
Join Visibuilt during this pivotal growth phase as we revolutionize the asphalt industry with the world's first fermentation-based asphalt binder. Our innovative technology replaces traditional fossil fuel-based asphalt binders with eco-friendly biological alternatives, driving a more sustainable future. After securing significant investments, we’re now expanding and searching for an innovative Material Scientist to lead our efforts in testing and improving the mechanical properties of our visiBIT-based pavement prototypes in Høje Taastrup, near Copenhagen.
You Will Thrive In This Role If The Following Points Resonate With You:
- You’re a hands-on experimenter with a strong inclination towards practical tasks who enjoys the challenge of testing hypotheses and seeing real-world applications of your work.
- Your mind is wired for creativity; you seek connections, explore different perspectives, and are driven by exploring new solutions.
- You’re excited to join a growing start-up transitioning to scale-up, where flexibility and pragmatism are key to success.
- You flourish in fast-paced, entrepreneurial settings that emphasize quick decision-making within a flat, agile, and nearly bureaucracy-free organization.
- You thrive in collaborative teams where challenging ideas is encouraged, and where diverse perspectives are valued.
- We focus on creating an inspiring and collaborative work culture, where we encourage and support the personal development of each individual.
Your Primary Responsibilities Will Be:
- Enhancing the mechanical properties of visiBIT in our visiPAVE prototypes.
- Developing and testing various processing methods to improve the prototype performance in outdoor environments.
- Conducting chemical experimentation with visiBIT and pavement materials.
- Collaborate with the R&D and Production teams to optimize prototypes for scalability, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.
- Keep track of multiple parallel experiments and projects.
Requirements:
To succeed in the position, we expect you to:
- Minimum a bachelor’s degree in (bio) Materials Science, (bio) Material Engineering, (bio) Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Have 1-3 years of practical experience, preferably with a focus on (bio)polymers or biomaterials.
- Be ready to engage physically at our production and test facilities in Høje Taastrup, near Copenhagen.
In addition to these minimum requirements, the ideal candidate has hands-on experience with material characterization tools and techniques that assess the mechanical properties, strengths, and durability of materials. Experience in conducting stress-strain, compression, and impact tests, as well as analyzing material fatigue and failure modes, will be considered an asset.
Work-hours & Compensation
We are looking for a full-time employment (37 hours per week) or part-time employment (minimum 32 hours per week). The salary will be slightly below market value, but with the prospect of other incentive schemes.
In addition, we offer a comprehensive benefits package including:

About Visibuilt
About Visibuilt
Our journey began in early 2023 when Visibuilt was established by our founder, Line Kloster Pedersen. Line holds an educational background in biotechnology and has previously cofounded a fungi company in the food industry.
Her inspiration for starting Visibuilt came during her occasional runs around the lakes in Copenhagen, where she observed how fungi connected the soil, creating the natural pathways that surround the lakes.
During her research on the asphalt industry, she was shocked to learn that the current asphalt market still relies on oil-dependent principles similar to those used 100 years ago, with little to no alternatives on the market. This observation sparked her imagination, leading her to contemplate the possibility of a natural fungal binder like nature's own.
This is the foundation of Visibuilt’s solution, visiBIT, which aims to reduce the road industry's dependency on fossil-fueled binders in the future and take part in the global move to develop groundbreaking climate tech solutions.
